“The Laman Family occupied the Storekeepers Cottage for a large part of the1800’s, purchasing from the AA Company in the 1850’s.”

The Laman Suite name is inspired by Thomas Laman who arrived in 1826 as a carpenter for the AA Co. Thomas and his family are significant in the history of Stroud and the AA Co. The Laman Family occupied the Storekeepers Cottage for a period in the 1850’s. The cottage has art featuring Thomas Laman and his contribution to Stroud.

Laman was recognized as a man of great architectural and building skills as well as being an able Mechanic. He is credited with building:

  • Stroud House
  • Booral House
  • John’s Church
  • Carrington Church
  • Telegherry House
  • The Flour Mill

In a general review of all the free servants of the AA Co. Parry (Company Commissioner) wrote of Laman, “Faithful, respectable, most valuable servant. If I was to select any one as the most valuable….it would be this man”.
